Your Child Will Use AI Every Day. Are They Ready?

For parents of children aged 7–12. Because the question is not whether they will use it. The question is what they will use it with.

Your 9-year-old has a question for a school project. Something about the water cycle, or the Roman Empire, or how photosynthesis works. It does not matter which.

They type it into an AI. In three seconds, four paragraphs arrive. Confident. Well-structured. Complete.

They copy two of them into their document. It is not that they are copying from the AI because they are lazy. It is that they have not yet built the capacity to use it as a starting point rather than a conclusion. That is a different problem. And it is yours to address before they need it.

You watch this happen and you feel something you cannot quite place. Not alarm, exactly. The homework is being done. The information is probably accurate. The sentences are better than your 9-year-old could have written. And yet.

Something did not happen in those three seconds. Some reaching, some sitting with the uncertainty, some moment of having to generate something from within, did not occur. It was shortcut. Cleanly and without drama and with no obvious cost.

The cost is the question no one is asking. Not what AI will do to your child's career at twenty-five. What it is doing to how they think right now, in this year, in the years between seven and twelve when the habits of mind are forming that will determine whether they arrive at the AI interface with something to bring to it, or whether the AI is what they bring.

That question is what this article is about.


The Question Parents Are Not Asking About AI and Their Child's Thinking

The question most parents are asking about AI is: what will it do to my child?

The more important question is: what will my child bring to it?

A child who arrives at an AI interface with strong Critical Reasoning, the capacity to evaluate a claim rather than accept it, will use AI in a fundamentally different way than a child who has not built that capacity. The first child uses AI as a starting point and subjects its output to the same evaluation they apply to everything else. The second child uses AI as a conclusion.

The difference is not intelligence. It is not digital literacy in the technical sense. It is a specific interior capacity that either has been built by the time they need it, or hasn't.

Critical Reasoning, as we have documented in our work on the first generation that may never think for themselves, is the capacity to evaluate external claims rather than accept them. It is built between ages seven and twelve. A child who is using AI instead of thinking, not as a tool but as a replacement for the attempt, is a child who has not yet built the interior capacity that makes the tool safe to use. It is built through practice at home, not through instruction at school. And it is built before the child needs it, or it is too late to build it for the moment that requires it.


What "Ready" Actually Means

Being ready for AI is not about knowing how to use it. Children intuitively navigate interfaces. They will learn the mechanics without instruction.

Being ready is about having the interior architecture that makes the tool an extension of your own thinking rather than a replacement for it.

A child is ready for AI when they habitually ask: is this true? When they notice when something sounds authoritative but cannot be verified. When they know the difference between a source that has reasoned through a position and one that has pattern-matched to sound like it has. When they can produce their own analysis and then use AI to test and extend it, rather than producing AI's analysis and calling it theirs.

That disposition, that reflexive evaluation, is not taught in a lesson about AI. It is built through hundreds of small moments, across the years between seven and twelve, in which a child is required to think for themselves rather than consult something external.

The window for this building is exactly now.


What the Research Found

The Brookings Institution's 2026 study of 505 students, parents, teachers, and researchers across 50 countries provides the clearest data we have on what happens when the tool is used without the interior preparation.¹

Children who consistently used AI to shortcut thinking showed measurable declines in independent content knowledge, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving. The pattern the researchers described is self-reinforcing: using AI to avoid thinking reduces the capacity for independent thought, which makes the child more likely to use AI to avoid thinking.

The researchers named this a "doom loop" of outsourcing. And they identified the same dynamic in children who had never touched an AI tool: the habit of outsourcing thinking to any external source creates the same cognitive atrophy. AI simply accelerates it and makes it visible.

What protects against the doom loop is not restricting access to AI. It is building the interior capacity that makes a child a user of AI rather than a vehicle for it.


The Capacity That Makes the Difference

Critical Reasoning emerges between ages seven and nine and becomes urgent between nine and twelve. In those years, three specific habits are either built or not.

The first is the habit of the next question. When a child is given an answer, do they stop there, or do they ask something that goes beyond it? The child who habitually asks "but why?" or "how do we know that?" is practising the most important cognitive habit in the AI age. The child who habitually accepts the first answer is practising the most vulnerable one.

The second is the habit of perspective-taking in reasoning. The capacity to consider that a piece of information comes from a source with a perspective, and that the perspective shapes the information. This does not require cynicism. It requires the recognition that all claims have an origin and the origin is worth knowing. A child who asks "who is saying this and why?" about a claim in a news article will ask the same question about an AI response.

The third is the habit of verification. Not the mechanical skill of fact-checking, but the instinct to treat important claims as unverified until you have traced them to their source. This habit is built through practice, through watching a parent model it, and through the experience of finding, occasionally, that something that sounded true wasn't.

Five Wonder questions a week are one of the most direct ways to build the first habit. Questions that cannot be Googled, that require the child to produce something from their own perspective, build the reflexive self-consultation that is the precondition of evaluating any external source.


What to Build Before They Need It

For children aged 7–9: the daily practice is one question with no external answer. Not a test question. A question that requires the child to produce something from their own imagination, experience, or reasoning. Ask it. Then receive the answer without correcting or improving it.

What you are building is the child's experience of their own interior as a source of something worth producing. A child who has daily experience of this becomes, gradually, a child who consults themselves before consulting an external source. That reflexive self-consultation is exactly what makes the AI interface a tool rather than a teacher.

For children aged 9–12: the practice extends to evaluation. Once a week, sit with your child and look at something that claims to be true. It can be an AI-generated response, an article, something they told you they learned. Ask together: how would we actually know if this is right? Where is it coming from? Is there anything that challenges it?

Not to create paranoia. To build the instinct.


The generation being raised right now will live in a world saturated with AI-generated content: information, opinion, art, argument, analysis, all of it produced instantly by systems that have been trained on everything ever written and that can produce confident, well-formed, sometimes wrong outputs in seconds.

The children who will navigate that world well are not the children who learn to detect AI. They are the children who can think for themselves well enough that the difference between AI and genuine reasoning is something they can feel from the inside.

That feeling, that capacity, is what we have been calling the interior life. It is not built by AI literacy programmes. It is built at home, in small daily moments, by a parent who asks the question that has no external answer and then waits to hear what the child produces.

That practice, started today, is the AI preparation that actually matters.

My child already uses AI for school. Should I restrict it?

Restriction is unlikely to be the most effective lever. The more durable lever is building the interior capacity that makes the child a discerning user rather than a dependent one. The child who has developed a habit of self-consultation will use AI as a tool. The child who has not will use it as a replacement. Focus the effort on the building, not the restriction.

How do I talk to my child about AI without creating anxiety about the future?

Keep the conversation in the present tense and grounded in what your child can do. The question is not "AI will change the world, are you prepared?" The question is "here is an interesting claim. What do you think about it? How would we check it?" The practice is curiosity-based and collaborative, not anxiety-inducing. A child who learns to evaluate claims experiences it as interesting, not threatening.

My child uses AI fluently and seems very competent with it. Should I still be concerned?

Fluency with a tool is not the same as the capacity to evaluate it. A child can be technically sophisticated at using AI and simultaneously have no habit of questioning its outputs. The two are independent. If your child can use AI fluently and habitually ask "but is this right?", they are in an excellent position. If they use it fluently and habitually accept what it produces, the interior work is still ahead.
