Watch the moment closely, because the moment is quick. Your child picks up the stick. For a moment, the stick is a stick. Then something invisible happens, and the stick is a sword, and your child is somewhere else entirely.

Researchers who study creative thinking have a name for what just fired: divergent thinking. Convergent thinking narrows toward the one right answer, and school will train that skill hard. Divergent thinking opens outward: how many things could this be? What else could work? What the research found

The link between pretending and this skill is not a guess. Researchers who study children’s play built careful measures of both, and the findings line up: children who engage in richer pretend play show stronger divergent thinking, generating more ideas, and more unusual ideas, when a problem has many possible answers.

The measures themselves are almost games. In one classic task, a child is handed an ordinary thing, a cup, a button, a box, and asked what the thing could be used for. Some children stop at the obvious use. The strong divergent thinkers keep going: a hat, a boat, a drum, a house for a beetle. The children rich in pretend play are the ones who keep going.

The researchers’ explanation is the simple one. Pretend play IS divergent thinking practice. Every transformation, stick to sword, box to rocket, cloth to river, is one repetition. A childhood of pretending is thousands of repetitions, run daily, powered by delight.

Why plain things beat finished toys

Here is a quiet, practical finding hiding in all this: the props matter, and the other way round from what the toy shops say.

A finished toy is one answer, already given. A toy sword can only be a sword. But a stick is a question. The plainer the thing, the more answers the thing can hold, and the more work the mind gets to do. A box, a cloth, a stick, and unhurried time are all the playroom the skill needs.

Beyond that: keep plain things reachable. When your child hands you the folded box and the box has become a rocket, board the rocket. And never rank the makings. The moment a making gets graded, the making starts aiming at the grade, and the many answers narrow toward the one that pleased.
